What 56k modem standards do you support?

Our dialup network, supports the ITU V.90 standard.  If your modem is not V.90 compatable you should upgrade to v.90 standard. Please check www.56k.com for upgrade compatabliity

  • What connect speeds can I expect to achieve? The condition of the your phone line to the phone company's Central Office will determine the actual speed of your connection. Some telephone lines may not be able to support speeds above 33.6 kbps.
  • Why don't I connect at the maximum speed? Most slower connect speeds are caused by phone circuits not being able to perform at the optimum speed.

The initial speed that your modem (or computer) reports upon connection is not always a reliable indication of your baud rate. Modems tend to change baud rates or "retrain" many times during an connect session. Most modems tend to initial a connecti on at a slower more reliable speed and then "retrain" to faster speeds as conditions allow.
If you are consistently connecting at slow speeds we suggest some of the following:
    • Plug a telephone into the line that the modem uses and listen carefully to the line. If you hear hissing or static you may need to have the line looked at.
    • Make sure that the serial port rate on your computer is set to 38400 or higher. Settings below 38400 will limit how fast your computer can communicate with the modem and cause slower speeds.
    • Watch out for heat. If you have an external modem make sure it does not get to hot. Most modems operate better when they are kept cool.
    • If you have the telephone line connected to a surge-suppressor strip or have it daisy-chained through several other devices (phone, fax, etc) try removing these extra items and plugging the line directly into the wall.
    • Keep the modem and telephone clear of large appliances. Air conditioners, refrigeraters and other large appliances can cause problems.
